Winter Holidays

Minimize hazards during the winter months

The holiday season is a time for gathering with family and friends to celebrate, but it also comes with its fair share of hazards. Fire, illness and travel all pose a risk during the winter months. Take steps to minimize these risks by taking care of yourself and practicing fire safety.

Be mindful of your health this holiday season and take good care of yourself.

  • Prevent the spread of germs and wash your hands frequently. Travel-size hand sanitizers can be your best friend.
  • Bundle up and stay dry. Bring extra socks with you when you go out.
  • Travel safely this season. Buckle up and watch for ice. Don’t drink and drive.
  • Keep your stress in check. Monitor your spending, get enough sleep, stay relaxed and maintain a positive work-life balance.
  • Stay up to date on your vaccinations
  • Don’t overeat this season. Stay active every day and eat healthier by avoiding sugar, salt and fats.

Cooking for a big holiday party can be a huge disaster if not done carefully. Take the time to follow safety precautions to avoid any incidents. Make sure to clean grease and dust from your oven and stove top frequently. Most importantly, never leave your kitchen unattended while something is cooking.

Avoid creating fire hazards with a few Fire Safety Tips.

  • Lights: Inspect before use, do not string more than three together, use as directed (indoor or outdoor), purchase those tested by reputable labs, turn off while asleep or away from home, plug in correctly and do not overload outlets
  • Tree: Water daily to prevent from drying out and becoming a fire hazard
  • Heating: Keep stockings, gifts, decorations and other flammable objects at least three feet away from open flame and space heaters
  • Candles: Consider using battery-operated flameless candles
